Give and Let Live is an educational resource from NHS Blood and Transplant The aim of the resource is to provide students aged 14-16 with the knowledge and understanding of key issues relating to donating parts of their body, either in life or after death, to help others. It provides you with creative resources and detailed facts and figures to bring the subject to life. But don’t take it from us, see what other teachers have to say about the pack.
“I would have no reservations about this material being used with either my year group or indeed my own children once they were old enough. A timely and much needed resource.”
PSHE/Citizenship teacher, England
“The teacher notes are detailed with a wealth of background information.”
Social Education Co-ordinator, Scotland
“A particular strength of the resource is the wide range of exemplar materials/case studies which are certainly thought-provoking and designed to engage pupils in debate and discussion.”
Headteacher, Wales
Teacher's pack
As well as this website, a teacher's pack is available which provides suggested lesson plans, fact sheets and activity sheets, and eight case study cards for students. The materials have been designed to allow for maximum flexibility so that the project can be tackled as a series of three to four one-hour sessions, or, where less time is available, as a one-off session.
The materials are designed to encourage discussion and debate. For students who require additional support with the discussion activities, we have provided an additional support card. Additional support card
You can download the teacher's booklet and student cards or order a free copy through the post.
Using the website in class
This website contains a wealth of useful information and interactive or audio-visual materials to complement your teaching:
Introductory film – this short film sets the tone for the materials and gives students a quick snapshot of why giving during life and/or after death is important and a rewarding thing to do.
The Donor Body – the body contains factual information about blood, bone marrow, tissue and organs. It can be used to introduce the subject to students with little understanding of the need for these parts of their bodies.
Virtual blood donation session – this presentation explains the process of giving blood.
Case studies – you can download a number of case studies about people who have benefited from blood, bone marrow, tissue or organ donation.
